Damilola created the site specific Youtube Commission to mark the opening of Google & YouTube’s new London headquarters. Working entirely freehand and in situ over the course of nine days, Damilola let his swarming imagination pour over the walls and dictate the narrative of this urban frieze.
His background as Londoner, illustrator and dancer has informed the work which echoes the dynamism of the company and its new metropolitan surroundings. London has here been given pride of place, the narrative articulating and wrapping itself around its iconic landmarks.
Little characters inhabit this whirl-winding cityscape which almost seems in motion, in a vibrating dance-like rhythm. Genderless, ageless, raceless and thus universal and personifiable the characters enact smaller detailed scenes within the bigger picture. An even closer look reveals a multitude of details and symbols which are as many winks and links to Youtube and technology; here we find make-up brushes, there the play pause and stop symbols as modern hieroglyphs.
All encompassing, this drawn universe links the old and the new, from the Globe Theatre to the Shard, from bellows cameras and VHS tapes to drones and smartphones. Acknowledging the past, we look here towards a vibrant and bright technological future.
